Advancing the Vision 12-13-19

I don't know about you, but it can be a struggle to stay focused and on mission when you are sick, out a few days for a conference, when you have a bunch of your students sick, when there are holiday festivities and interruptions, etc. etc.

This is not a problem for our staff, though.  I was able to see lots of high-quality instruction going on this week!  Check out the active engagement in math classes throughout the building!

We know that providing opportunities for students to work together increases active engagement and that Kagan structures ensure that all students equally participate.  As we wrap up 2019, I encourage you to reflect on your instructional practice.   I know I have pushed small group instruction HARD as a means to differentiate, incorporate iready practice, and co-teach, but are there times when using a whole group structure with Kagan would actually be better?

Think about it.  What's the purpose of using small groups?  Many times it is to differentiate.  If you are teaching an introductory lesson and/or what you are planning is to teach is going to be the SAME for every group, what's the point of using stations?  Might you be better to use whole group and Kagan?  Don't be afraid to change things up a bit depending on the goals for your lessons.

The main thing is to be reflective and intentional.  Think about what you want to accomplish and choose the best way to structure your class after that reflection.
