Level Up Leveling up is a concept in games in which a character experiences some sort of progression that usually entails unlocking new abilities, skills, access to new items, access to a new area of the game, or as a benchmark of how far into the game a character is.
At our first Leveling Up Team Huddle, we considered 3 areas in which we can level-up as a staff:
1. The Ratio of Positive to Negative Interactions within teaching whole group lessons. I modeled how I would focus on this during a whole group lesson teaching about Active Engagement.
Action Item: Let another staff member and/or me know if you would like me to track your ratio in your classroom for a period of time. During the staff meeting, Laura tracked mine and I had a 24:4 ratio with you all! She also reported that I gave every teacher attention for a positive behavior except for 2. :)
2. Leveling Up in Active Engagement - I focused on asking/answering questions. We classified questions according to purpose and I challenged everyone to do one of the following:
Action Item:
- When asking "Participatory Telling" questions, wait 3 seconds before calling on a student and then do so using some kind of random selection technique.
- When asking "Performance Questions" incorporate a Timed Pair Share or a Rally Robin.
3. Minds in Motion - When can you incorporate this great resource into your day?
4. Helping our ELLs - We received lots of ideas from Mrs. Atallah! Here is the link to the powerpoint with all the resources.
