As I have gotten to know you and the students I have been asking, "What sets Paint Lick apart?" and "What has contributed to the success of our students year after year?" I see lots of answers to these questions each day, but one characteristic runs throughout everything I see. Your high expectations are so evident and make a HUGE difference in what your students produce.
Check out Mrs. Akers' high expectations in her reading workshop...
The work that the students do when they aren't working with her is incredible. When I stopped by this week some students were working on short answer questions. "Prove it" was written on the students' papers. Mrs. Akers does not accept answers until they proved it. That practice is high expectations in action.
Other students were working on comprehension skills. They had passages and were determining the theme. What a simple, yet powerful way to have students work on reading skills while others are getting pulled for guided reading groups!
Ms. Fain's class is the model of high expectations. They were working on their KPREP-like scrimmage when I visited. Their district-sponsored one wasn't KPREP-like enough so they did it again this week! :)
Speaking of expectations, you should see the way that Ms. Lewis begins her class with behavior expectations. I love how she calls students attention to our behavior expectations before she teaches lessons.
It really is a privilege to get to work at Paint Link with you all!! Thanks for everything you do!!
